Hartley passed on his collection in his passing to the Archives of Performing Arts, an institution he created that housed an extensive collection of books and other circulating and on-circulating materials related to performing arts. The legacy of Hartley is on display at the San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum located at 410 Van Ness Avenue, 4th floor Veterans Building, San Francisco.

Another famous performing arts library and museum is the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The library contains various materials related to performing arts. The items in the archives of the library now numbers at more than nine million.

Aside from being a circulating and research institution, the New York Public Library also exhibits art materials with themes in performing arts. The research collections of the library are divided into four units: The Jerome Robbins Dance Division, the Music Division, The Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound and the Billy Rose Theatre Collection.
